Washer Won't Spin? Check These Systems First
A washer that fills and washes but will not spin may have a drain problem, an unbalanced load, a door lock issue or a drive-system fault. The symptom and cycle stage determine where to begin.
What to check first
Confirm that draining finishes
Many washers will not accelerate into spin while the tub still contains too much water. Before suspecting the motor, identify whether the machine completed the drain stage and whether the remaining water is normal for that model.
Look for an unbalanced load
A bulky blanket or a few heavy items may prevent a safe high-speed spin. Redistribute the load as the owner's manual recommends and note whether an error message or repeated balancing attempt appears.
Consider the door or lid lock
The control often requires a verified locked-door signal to spin. If the machine reports an open door, stops when the lock engages or never attempts to lock, the interlock system deserves attention.
Separate a slow spin from no drum movement
A washer that tumbles or agitates but never reaches full spin may have a different problem from one whose drum never turns. Belt condition, suspension feedback, drive motors and control systems vary by design.
Use manufacturer diagnostic information
Service mode and stored error codes may help identify which sequence failed. Codes are clues rather than automatic instructions to replace a component; confirm findings with model-specific service procedures.
