Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes? Where to Start
Poor cleaning is not automatically a detergent problem. Water temperature, circulation, filters, spray arms and loading can all affect the wash result. A logical check order avoids unnecessary part replacement.
What to check first
Describe the pattern
Are all dishes dirty, only items in one rack, or mainly glasses and cutlery? A location-specific pattern can suggest spray coverage or rack-loading problems.
Inspect accessible filters
A dirty filter or debris in the accessible sump area can interfere with circulation and leave residue. Follow the owner's manual and take care around sharp objects.
Check spray-arm movement and loading
Tall items, utensils and cookware may block arm rotation. With the machine stopped, verify clear movement and look for obvious debris in accessible spray openings.
Consider water supply and temperature
Improper filling or water that is too cool can reduce washing performance. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for water temperature, detergent and rinse aid rather than assuming one universal setting.
Distinguish circulation from draining
A dishwasher that fills and drains may still have weak washing circulation. Listen for changes in the wash stage and use model-specific diagnostics if professional evaluation is required.
